ESRM 352 - Theory & Practice of Ecological Restoration

Sean Anderson

This is a survey course designed to give you the necessary background to begin to deal with the challenge of restoring degraded ecosystems. We will be studying restoration ecology with an eye to the realities of our time. While our discussions will take place in a biological setting, I will endeavor to impart to you the importance of legal, social, bureaucratic, economic, and logistical savvy. Restoration ecologists are challenged to bring an effective, rigorous scientific approach into an often chaotic arena. Even if you will not become a restoration ecologist per se, as a private citizen you will increasingly be called upon to evaluate such efforts and determine both public and private policy.

This is an overview of the Mugu Lagoon-Ormond Beach wetland complex in Ventura County, California. Here I briefly cover cultural attitudes towards wetlands, the history of wetlands in California and the west coast of the United States, and the specific history of our coastal wetlands here in Ventura County, California. I end with a very brief run-through of some of our wetland monitoring efforts here and elsewhere.

Here we introduce various key aspects of the abiotic environment that have a direct bearing on restoration design, implementation, and success. We touch on hydrology, soil properties, simply geomorphology, pH, redox and salinity. Most examples are couched within the context of coastal salt marshes along the California coast, but we do touch on examples of wetlands in other regions.

This is a "fake" talk to begin to illustration the kind of paper-based presentations students will need to give later in the quarter. Please note that due to questions, explanations, etc. this sample talk is about 3x as long as the typical student presentation should be. The topic is the real paper in our reading for this week.
